What inspired these abstract designs?
In personal work, I begin the design process while moving the glass around and a concept emerges as the work progresses. Past concepts I’ve explored include ‘Inside the Box’, ‘Connections’ and ‘Signs and Symbols’. During this project, the process more closely resembled my previous work flow in branding and identity graphics. Everything was researched, planned and sketched in advance. The client and art consultant received samples of concepts to be refined. Even the colors were agreed upon before I set foot in the glass studio. To jump start the design process, I found images and researched the city where the work would live. The panel renderings were then abstracted from photographs and maps of Milwaukee itself. The colors were inspired by the colors of Lake Michigan blues and the sunsets over the lake. It was a great way to learn about the city and its special places. Discovery World, the Art Museum, District 3, and the plaza all look awesome and I hope to have the opportunity to visit them in the future!
